Patrol Competition – Bowline Sheet Bend Draw

SCOUTS HAVE FUN PUTTING THEIR SKILLS INTO ACTION WITH THE BOWLINE SHEET BEND DRAW

After you learn to tie a bowline around your waist and a sheet bend to join together two lines, pairs of Scouts or entire patrols can race one another with the Bowline Sheet Bend Draw. To learn how to tie these knots, refer to the Scouts BSA Handbook.  View Scouting America: How-to Videos – Basic Knots: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLLpFhePCKYDujPCJc7kd9oWgR9JmIp9PE

—> After any Scout skill is learned, there should be an opportunity to put it into action in a fun way that illustrates how it’s used. Here’s a simple activity your troop will really enjoy:

BOWLINE SHEET BEND DRAW

Each Scout needs a six foot rope. Scouts buddy up and face each other. A good way to start is to ave each Scout hold their rope in their right hand raised above their head.

At the word, “Go!” each races to tie a bowline around their waist, and then one Scout in each pair joins the ropes together with a sheet bend. When done, players lean back with their full weight to test the knots.

Activities like this provide a fun opportunity to put knot-tying skills into action. This way, when it it’s time to use the knots in the field, Scouts are all the more prepared. For a library of ideas on how to make more fun happen during meetings and outings, visit the activities section of the Troop Leader Resource Hub: https://troopleader.scouting.org/activities/
